655 Third Avenue was the first project the Durst family built from the ground up. Seymour leased and financed the buildings, his brother Roy supervised management, and his brother David handled construction and design—all under the watchful eye of patriarch Joseph Durst.
This was also the first building with a free-standing abstract sculpture (Windward by Jan Peter Stern) on a New York City sidewalk. In 2004, all windows in 655 Third Avenue were replaced with double-glazed, grey-tinted windows, which deflect glare and reduce heat gain. The building is actively tracking its energy performance with Energy Star.
A green building is simply more efficient, providing a better, more productive work environment.
